Career Coaching & Counseling

As a therapist, I often help my clients sort through different external aspects of their lives that are related to their mental health, like career dissatisfaction. Though I have a certificate in coaching, I do know the limits of my skills/abilities and often make recommendations to other resources.

Here is an example…. A current client is considering a career change, and I just sent them an email with suggestions. Here is a copy/edit/paste excerpt from that email that I’m posting here in case it may be helpful for others as well.

CAREER COACHING

There seems to be three different categories of accessing career coaching

1. Individual 1:1

PROS:

  • Likely offers the most individualized attention out of the three options

  • Has the highest level of individualized attention

  • Probably offers the highest level of accountability, since you will be asked specifically if you have done your homework

CONS

  • Probably the most expensive overall

  • Lacking the group aspect, you won't have the opportunity to meet others in the same boat and learn from their questions and experiences.

2. Virtual groups with scheduled zoom style meetings, probably weekly

PROS:

  • Probably less expensive than individual coaching

  • Real-time meetings with other people who are also going through career transitions can help you feel supported, learn from other group member's questions, etc.

  • A higher level of accountability than #3

CONS:

  • If you have an unpredictable schedule, you may not be able to make all of the meetings. However the sessions might be recorded for you to watch later, so thoroughly research any programs you are considering to see if that's available.

3. Self-paced, pre-recorded sessions

PROS:

  • Probably the least expensive

  • Self-paced, which can be good for flexibility

CONS:

  • Self-paced, which can be difficult for momentum and accountability

  • Might be too “cookie cutter,” lacking individualized attention from the coach

  • Lacks the momentum one can get from an individual coach or a group/class

It is really helpful to know what you are looking for in a coaching program (ex: deciding on a new career direction, writing your resume, interview practice, etc), and THIS LINK can help you to think that through before signing up.

Good luck!
